LSUS has employed the services of curriculum coach,
Mrs. Cindy McKinney,
who will work in conjunction with the Board of Directors and faculty
to keep teaching methods and strategies up-to-date.

Religion The saving Gospel of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ is taught at LSUS via the Voyages curriculum printed by Concordia Publishing House and through the witness of the instructors in word and deed. The eighth grade learns about various books of the Bible. Memory work is used to expand religious instruction.

Mathematics LSUS has adopted the NWEA testing program as one way to measure student progress throughout the year. Problem solving and Problem of the Day activities were evident in the classrooms. Saxon Math is used in grades K-5 while Prentice Hall is taught in grades 6-8. Teachers strong in math are able to teach math to other classes. LSUS also provides pre-algebra and algebra classes for students in the eighth grade.

Language Arts Language is a gift of God so that through Him learning of the world He has made can take place. Through language we are able to “Tell the Good News about Jesus” to those who don’t know Him as their Savior. Learner outcomes are age and grade appropriate and measurable in the reading and language arts curriculum. Teachers demonstrate current practices and professional growth. The Shurley Method is used to enforce grammar skills. The Accelerated Reader program is used to test reading levels. These skills are aligned with the Indiana State Standards.

Social Studies LSUS has adopted a very comprehensive social studies program. It includes the study of Indiana history in the fourth grade and U.S. history in the fifth grade and eighth grade. Up-to-date textbooks are in use. Students in the upper grades are becoming very adept at taking notes in the classes.

Science Science is taught at all levels using a hands-on approach covering the different branches of science. A Science Fair is held every two years to broaden the student’s understanding of the scientific method.

Music Music is taught in K-8. Students have the opportunity to be in choirs and sing praises to God. The choirs also participate in worship services at the supporting congregations. The upper grades experience music from many different genres. Band and Strings Instruction are also offered on site using teachers from Concordia Lutheran High School.

Art Art is an expression of God’s beauty in His creation that has its source in experiences of many kinds at LSUS. The bulletin boards in the halls reflect this using many different types of media. The art curriculum reflects different media and is age appropriate. Art is integrated into other areas of the curriculum.

Technology LSUS has a strong focus on keyboarding skills. The computer skills learned by the students are put into place in the area of homework assignments across the curriculum. Classroom computers as well as computers in the media center are used for Accelerated Reader and NWEA testing by students.

efforts to develop effective learning experiences though the teaching of
strategies that are based in years of educational research.

includes clear steps in preventing bullying behaviors from occurring at our
school. Weekly class meetings allow students and teachers to discuss current
issues and challenges that arise.
